  CHAPTER 1

“Hi Stellar,” I say, waving at the lady dressed in a grey suit against a computer booth.

She looks up and brightens up when she sees me. “Charlie! Nice to see you.”

“Nice to see you too sugar cake.” The department is bustling with activities. Whatever is going on must have a role to play in the reason Harry called me to report in this morning.

I continue my stride towards the bosses office. A new guy in a light-green shirt and ash trousers almost made me as he sweeps toward the right. Noticing it on time, my instinct kicks in, and I take a swift turn backward with my hand rested on his shoulder to guide him.

  “Watch out buddy.”

“Sorry, sir didn’t see you coming on time.” He says, glancing from the pile of paperwork still intact in his hold to my cheerful face.

  “It is nothing,”

” You must be Agent C, trained-”

“Let me stop you there, rookie. I have someplace to be, and you are about to spoil my landing streak. So nice meeting you and watch your steps next time.”

I turn, leaving the recruit as he bobbles his head in agreement. From my calculation, I still have one second left before I can no longer make it on time to the old man’s office.

Ii clip through the remaining space to Harry office. Charlotte is just stepping out of the door as I halt. She winks at me with a lopsided grin.

“Hey handsome, how are you doing?” she says while adjusting the papers in her hands.

“I am good as always. Care if I spend time in your bed later?”

She nods in the negative, chuckling. A sigh comes from the room. “Quit flirting agent C and get into this room before you lose your time streak. Jeez.”

“I will see you later,” I say to Charlie, and she nods, still beaming. The echo of her heels speaks of her departure. I ready my suit and advance into the room.

  CHAPTER 2

“Nope, I cannot do it, man. You know I quit, doing those stuff. I thought you called me here today to talk about a pay raise or something office like.” I say, staring at the information displayed on the tablet.

“Common agent, you are a soldier and a spy, the spirit of taking the risk just don’t die. Besides, we are short of operatives with your skill set to handle this job. You know you get the chance to take down a Mafia that has held the economy and governance of a powerful nation. And you also get to be recognized by the president of the United States and of, you know where.”

My heart bubbles as I catch on to what he is trying to do. “You never change, Harry. You should be a salesman.”

He laughs too. “I know, I missed my calling, but don’t you lose yours, son. Guess what? If you do this job, you do not only get a raise, you get your priced office corner and retire.”

“I thought an agent never retires.”

Harry puffs his cheek and sighs. “You want to, as long as I am at the hems of this department, no field work. So, help me out.”

  “Okay.”

  CHAPTER 3

Out of the office, with the details of the operation cased in the tablet, I close in on my car parked at the opposite end of the street. I will be going to the drop point, but first I must find out why Maggie, my daughter, is yet to call.

The traffic light is still in the red, so lots of cars are lined up before me. People are hustling back and forth in the street. Deciding to continue on the path I am on till I get to where my car is packed, I amble forward.

A boy with a skateboard stops before my red Nissan brings out a gadget from his pocket and begins to crack the lock.

“Hey, don’t you dear!” I say at the top of my voice, breaking into a gallop. The child share glances between me and the car, weighing his options. He decides to run for it throwing his skateboard on the floor and mounting on it. The horn of a vehicle catches my attention, and I snap to the back just in time to get run into by a young woman in a red top. My legs slid off the ground, and black dots envelop my vision as my head slams the ground.

First, I try to recollect where I am, second, I try to make sense of the situation and get up. The lady who hits me is on her feet, next to those who have gathered at the sidewalks to take a selfie. In her left-hand lies the tablet. She smiles and waves it at me before turning into the midst of bystanders.

Getting to my feet, I barrel hard after her. She and the teenage boy from earlier must be into it together to throw my mind off the target. Pursuing after her, we gallop down the street and turn to the left.

The lady in red halts before the building and smiles at me who just slammed into an old woman. Her grin widens, and she races into the building.

Glancing at the woman and finding her to be okay, I grab my firearm and charge into the building. Her footsteps greet me at the top floor, and I follow it. Soon I find myself on the roof and she standing next to the opposite edge, hands spread out, lips widen into a grin.

“Hold it right there, or I shoot. There is no escape for you. Hand the tablet over, now!”

She chuckles glancing down briefly. Something cold touches my head from behind. “You mean there is no escape for you? Trying to shoot an unarmed woman, you are a total disgrace.” another female voice greets me.

Slowly, I retrieve my stretched-out arm and move my neck to see who it is. Something hard slams into my head, and everything turns black.
